Awkward/Awesome Thursday

Sweater: Ebay (Gap), Skirt:Thrifted, Tights: Target, Oxfords: Thrifted, Purse:Vintage
As a tribute to Sydney, who took a break for September but is back and blogging with a sweet new design, I am doing an Awkward / Awesome post today.

Awkward
  • The day that this was taken my class started a bit later so Nick and I took the time to play. We were on this cool path that winds through the "woods" of campus and we could hear the music from the nearby soccer game blasting all the way up there, so we did what any rational person would do and got our groove on. When he dropped me off for class I gave one more hip wiggle in his direction and then looked to my left and saw my T.A. sitting on a bench watching me. I said, "Hey, how's it going?" And went inside to curl up in a corner.

  • Our photography teacher asked us what are favorite magazine is and the majority answered National Geographic, one person said Seventeen and another said People. He then told us that our next assignment was to make the cover of the magazine we had chosen, photo, fonts, everything. Poor them. Luckily I answered truthfully and said Kinfolk.

Awesome
  • I've spent many nights at home, after our long days on campus, painting while we unwind and talk together.

  • We went to my first football game. Not just my first college football but first any football. I think the longest that I've watched any sport (barring the Olympics of course) is about one hour. I am usually too antsy for anything longer. However, Nick's parental figures (they also happen to be his real parents) were in town in part for Parent's Weekend and this is our senior year so I thought what the hey, let's do it. And do it we did and trounced the Hawaiian team.

  • We went to a volleyball game for my fierce sister-in-law, Stephanie, and she whooped the other team. It. was. epic. I found myself shouting and cheering at the top of my lungs and probably looked a little strange in my long skirt gripping my camera. Not the picture of artistic lady-likeness that I had dressed for. :)

  • Cassandra's home. I want to live there too. I wonder if she'd mind the company.

  • Some of my favorite programs are back on TV (although I have yet to watch them.)
  •
I get to spend this weekend getting inspired while listening to this.

3 ways to turn awkward into awesome

Striped Shirt: Gap, Skirt: Thrifted, Belt: Thrifted, Boots: DSW, Necklace: Mommed
Thanks for all your nice comments about my skirt the other day. You made me feel good about leaving it that length for now. (I can always shorten it later, right?)

On a related note. Some people feel awkward when others, particularly strangers, give them compliments; but I say enjoy it. Genuinely thank them rather than say no I look gross or I'm really not that smart or anything else that would diminish what they said. The other day . . .
  1. I had an older lady-professor tell me how much she liked my outfit and that she was going to go home and try and remake it. My first thought was, blush. But then I really looked at her and realized that she was very chic-ly dressed as well.  I wanted to go home and see how I could steal her style. So, instead of stammering, I thanked her and took a mental picture for later.
  2. Same day, same outfit, a girl walked up the stairs behind me and called out. She asked to take a picture of me for a feature on her fashion blog. Is this some kind of magical outfit that encourages compliments? I might have to test this theory by wearing it for the next week straight and observe the reactions of those around me.
  3. Things to keep in mind as you look at these pictures:
  • The shirt and skirt were part of my loot from Saturday. (Yay!)
  • The skirt is made of 100% silk but was either $3 or $5! (Yay!)
  • Normally one should dry clean such things. (Boooo! Hiss!) I felt a little miffed at the idea of paying twice what the item cost to clean it and I also didn't want to wait the week to wear it. So, I just washed it by hand and voila! Could have turned out badly; instead this is my new favorite outfit endowed with the power to elicit compliments from passersby. Awesome!

Awesomely Awkward

How great is Nick getting at taking pictures? I give him a great big woot woot!
On the other hand, what is up with that rack shot? And I need some modeling lessons, because I have no idea what I am doing with my arms in that second picture above. Or face for that matter.
Skirt: Thrifted, Shoes: Steve Madden, Top: Shade, Sweater: Coldwater, Belt: BYU Bookstore, Necklace: MOA

Today I am taking a page out of one of my favorite blogs, the Daybook. I have some things, both awkwardly awesome and and awesomely awkward captured for you through picture and words

Awkward
  • kissing Nick goodbye outside of my work, and nothing crazy mind you, just a little peck but since some guy is standing nearby watching it turns into something weird
  • not shaving your legs but wearing a skirt anyway and then needing to be measured in sewing class. for pants length. dear sewing TA, I am sorry. you too, hubby.
  • Nick wearing shorts to school and then me bringing him a coat due to rain. I do not approve of the coat and shorts look.
  • arriving late to class and the teacher not only taking notice but pointing it out to the rest of the class and making sure you know that the first part was SUPER important and VITAL. Boo! FYI: I was at the doctor's!
Awesome
  • Nick walking me to work and my classes and vice versa so that we can spend a few more moments talking and just being together
  • fall happening practically overnight
  • our heater!
  • Nick doing dishes while I chill on the couch and simultaneously serenading me and giving me a good view of his cute tush.
  • Not showering! Maybe this awkward, but sometimes I feel like a kid who hates bath time. Or is that a puppy?
  • When awesome things outweigh awkward ones.
