movies to watch during Thanksgiving break

I love Thanksgiving for itself, but I also love that afterwards it's acceptable to be excited about Christmas. I can listen to Christmas music, put up decorations and talk about the holiday without people saying "It's not even Thanksgiving yet."

Here are some of my favorite movies that you should watch while waiting to baste your ten-pound turkey (yet again) or during your food-induced coma on the sofa next to your sleeping aunt.

The first two images are of two of my favorite movies. They are both from Miracle on 34th Street, the old version and the remake. I don't have a favorite between these two. It's a pretty sappy-sweet story, but I love it. There's a little girl who doesn't believe in Santa Claus and her mother who's in charge of the Macy's parade during Thanksgiving. (So, Hah! It is a Thanksgiving movie too.) It's also about the love interest between the cynical single mother and the lawyer neighbor. I love the black and white movie, it feels untouched and outside of time, but I also love the new version, the little girl is so precocious. Try them both out.

My other flick pick has to be It's a Wonderful Life. Even though this is a quintessential Christmas movie, lots of the scenes don't take place during Christmas time. It's more about George Bailey and his wife, Mary's, life together. How they met, or remet, and what happened after. I love this movie because so many other stories are about that first part, meeting, getting to know each other and then they ride off into the sunset and I never know about the nitty-gritty parts of their life together. But this movie shows what their life has become and it's not a picnic, in fact it begins with him trying to commit suicide, but they've built something beautiful together. Even with the angel and the flashbacks this story has a very real quality to it. Above everything it's about love, and enduring and kindness. "You want the moon? Just say the word and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey. That's a pretty good idea. I'll give you the moon, Mary." -George Bailey

Have you seen any of these films? What is your favorite holiday movie?

  1. I don't have a Thanksgiving movie tradition but I sure have a Christmas one. The family all gets together to watch Home Alone 1 and 2 over homemade popcorn and apple cider. Thanks for sharing this movie - I'm always up for expanding my library.

P.S - that's the little girl who played Matilda!

  2. I really appreciate your sweet comment on my blog. I very much enjoy decorating my house for the holidays. Isn't it funny how something that simple can fill us with so much joy? :) I enjoyed reading your post. I love Miracle on 34th Street. The older movie versions are the best in my opinion. My favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas. I've watched my VHS (yes, I still have one ;)) that it's worn out. I'm gonna have to break down and get it on dvd, I think. I hope you have a wonderful holiday.

    Blessings,
    Mel

  3. Miracle on 34th Street is one of our family favorites! Actually it probably IS my mom's all time favorite Christmas movie. Hubby love a Christmas Story, and I happen to love Elf just because I love to laugh a lot.

    Great list!

  4. Holiday films have always been a part of my family, as it was when I was growing up and ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, and ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ was always part of the sweetness. I also love Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer especially when that red nose starts blinking. So many great films can warm hearts when the Holidays come around each year. That magical feeling you get walking around and seeing all the lights aglow, each person having their own individual idea. I have the most amazing passion for film and I have turned that into a film blog, which keeps me happy when I travel for work on a regular basis. Because the Holidays are such an integrated part of my life thanks to my folks, I have been researching topics specifically for the special occasion. When talking with a colleague of mine who also works for Dish Network about the October 1st launch of Dish Network’s new package The Blockbuster Movie Pass I was thrilled as this was just another way they are making my life easier and more fun. Welcome live streaming! It seems like they are always coming up with fantastic ideas especially for individuals like me who have to travel frequently for work. Yet, still must maintain a passion that is very important to me that I would usually do at home. Yes, I will be traveling during the Holidays but its ok as I always keep a positive outlook and have pasted that down to my family. The Blockbuster Movie Pass will now be a combination of two of Dish Network’s prestigious packages the Dish Platinum and the Blockbuster by Mail package allowing me to stream thousands of movies with my laptop or my Dish receiver. How fantastic! I also now have access to thousands of DVD movies, TV shows and games by mail with unlimited exchange necessary for the elegant movie blog I have been hosting for years. It remotely streams directly to my laptop for TV if need be expanding my resources by a huge amount. Therefore, I can research the information I need from the film standpoint while looking into the media aspect as well which covers all the research necessary for the blog, $10 a month seems like a small price to pay for so many people’s enlightenment. My boyfriend is thrilled with the amount of video games available in this new package so that also makes me happy. Upon returning home, I can be at peace knowing that I can just write the blog entry to stimulate the new conversation topic, which is always, relaxing for me. However, even more importantly I can snuggle up with my family and watch the favorite films that have always lit our hearts with Holiday cheer.

  5. Mara Wilson is great in Miracle on 34th Street and It's a Wonderful Life is always good. I like how you said black and white films feel "untouched and outside of time". That's a perfect way to describe it.

  6. Good choices! I love "It's a Wonderful Life," but I would have to add "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby to the mix.
